Merkel backs Bush on Iran sanctions

Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany joined President George W. Bush on Wednesday in calling for further sanctions against Iran if it did not suspend its uranium enrichment program.

Hat Merkel tatsächlich zu weiteren Sanktionen gegen den Iran aufgerufen?

Im weiteren Verlauf des Artikels ist zu erfahren:

In her statements Wednesday, Merkel strongly supported the measures, saying, “If Iran does not meet its commitments, then further sanctions will simply have to follow.”

But she also seemed to signal that she did not support the kind of actions Bush has urged individual countries to take in addition to the United Nations sanctions, as for example the United States already has. Further measures “need to be negotiated in the Security Council of the United Nations,” Merkel said. “The more countries are in on this, the more effective the impact will be on Iran.”

Nun ist die Absegnung weiterer Sanktionen durch den UN Sicherheitsrat eigentlich genau das nicht, was Bush im Sinn hat. Er will nach dem Modell der Beschneidung finanzieller Transaktionen mit dem Iran Sanktionen einer „Koalition der Willigen“, da er weiß, dass derzeit für weitere Sanktionen im Sicherheitsrat keine Mehrheit zu finden ist.

Das weiß Angela Merkel natürlich auch. Deshalb hat sie mit dem Verweis auf den Sicherheitsrat eigentlich jegliche Sanktionen auf den St. Nimmerleinstag verschoben.
