Simon Tisdall vom Guardian, der mit erstaunlicher Konstanz – wenn um es um den Iran geht - daneben feuert, hält die Pläne der US Regierung, die Revolutionären Garden auf die Liste der terroristischen Vereinigungen setzen zu wollen, für ein „Schiessen mit Platzpatronen.“

While the Guards organisation as a whole has massive business interests in Iran, including businesses, hotels and property, the motivation of the al-Quds hardliners does not depend on material profits. They believe their reward will come in heaven.

Labeling Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization — as the State Department now proposes — is another distraction when what the Bush administration needs to be doing is opening comprehensive negotiations with Tehran, backed by increasing international economic pressure.

In dem Editorial – Überschrift: Amateur Hour on Iran – macht sich die NYT noch einmal für Verhandlungen über ein umfassendes Spektrum von Themen stark.

Those negotiations need to deal with all real and alleged facets of Iran’s many dangerous behaviors: its nuclear ambitions; its sectarian meddling in Iraq; its providing of missiles to Hezbollah in Lebanon and the charges it is arming the Taliban and others in Afghanistan. And any talks must take into account Iran’s concerns about its own security — with a clear offer that it can come in from the diplomatic and economic cold if it improves its behavior.

Die Revolutionären Garden zu einer “terroristischen Vereinigung” zu erklären, werde aber nicht helfen, das Regime zu einer Verhaltensänderung zu bewegen, sondern diene wohl in erster Linie dazu, den Falken in Washington entgegen zu kommen.

That suggests that the State Department’s real audience isn’t Tehran, but conflict-obsessed administration hawks, who are lobbying for military strikes, and conflict-averse European allies, who have resisted more far-reaching multilateral economic sanctions.

Und – meine 5 Cents – es senkt nicht unerheblich die psychologische Schwelle für eine mögliche militärische Aktion zu nennen. Jeder Angriff auf Teheran ließe sich als notwendige Maßnahme im „Kampf gegen den Terror“ rechtfertigen. Unter diesem Etikett sind die USA bereits in Afghanistan wie im Irak einmarschiert.

Eine erste Reaktion gab es gestern auch von iranischer Seite.

Foreign Ministry official on Wednesday dismissed as propaganda the US media report that the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) was put in the list of the terrorist organizations.

“Such reports fall within framework of the US statesmen’s psychological-propaganda warfare against the Islamic Republic of Iran and lack any professional value,” he said. (IRNA)
