US Präsident George W. Bush und der israelische Premierminister Ehmud Olmert haben bei ihrem Treffen in Washington ein „vollkommenes Verständnis für ihre Ziele” festgestellt.

Olmert said that he had had a “deep conversation” with Bush and that the two leaders had “complete understanding over their objectives” regarding Iran. (AFP)

Worin diese Ziele gegenüber dem Iran bestehen, formulierte Bush:

“If they continue to move forward with the program, there has to be a consequence,” he said, speaking to reporters following an hour-long talk with Olmert at the White House.

Bush said that if Iran continues with its program, which the United States and Israel believe is aimed at developing an atomic bomb despite Iran’s claims it is meant for peaceful means, “there has to be a consequence for their intransigence.”

“And a good place to start is working together to isolate the country,” he said, branding a nuclear-armed Iran as an “incredibly destabilizing, and obviously very threatening to our strong ally,” Israel.

Wer (und dazu zähle auch ich) erwartet hatte, Bush würde sich mit den scharfen Tönen gegenüber dem Iran ein wenig zurückhalten, um nicht die Möglichkeit von vorne herein zu verbauen, mit Teheran eine Annäherung im Interesse der Stabilität im Iran zu erreichen, sah sich enttäuscht. Die Botschaft war klar deutlich: vorerst (?) bleibt alles wie gehabt.

Olmert tat das Seine, um die Bedrohung durch das iranische Atomprogramm noch weiter zu dramatisieren.

Asked what he believed to be the timeline for Iran developing possible nuclear weapons, Olmert responded, “it’s a matter of, unfortunately, shorter time than most people think.”

“I don’t want to measure it in days or weeks, but it’s quite close,” he said.
